Estelle Spence Named Lady Captain at Northenden Golf Club
Estelle Spence is a relative newcomer to golf, having joined Northenden Golf Club seven years ago as a complete beginner.
Now she is thrilled to have been appointed as their lady captain for the year.
Estelle said: “Northenden is such a lovely club and when I joined a taster session as an absolute beginner seven years ago, I didn’t know anyone or anything about golf!
But I was given the warmest welcome and I have been fully supported the whole time I’ve been at the club.
“I have spent the last few years supporting women new to golf, and I know that a few of the new golfers like me have fallen in love with golf and the club.
“It’s a lovely club where the sections mix and golfers of all levels play together.
“I have lived in Sale for 20 years, but I will always be Northern Irish – but it’s a bit far to commute!
“I work for the NHS with researchers and my current WHS is 28 – after a poor year for my golf – and my lowest was 23.
“My favourite course, other than Northenden, is Wallasey as I had my second-best round ever there, felt very at home and it suited my low shots well.
My favourite hole at Northenden is the 16th as it looks good from the tee and the fairway is pretty wide, allowing for any less-than-central drives.
I am not a great fairway person!”
The Liverpool FC fan tries to play at least twice a week, more often in the summer when there is more daylight after work.
She added: “With working and playing golf, there is less time for other hobbies than I would really like, but my favourite thing to do is to spend time with my family in Northern Ireland.
“The charity I will be supporting is Melanoma Fund UK, who work with golfers and those who work at golf clubs to help with sun safety, which is something I think that we can all benefit from.
“My golfing highlights are scoring the best score, nett 64, on Mr Captain’s Day a few years ago, and it was also a highlight to be the first woman to play in a Saturday competition at Northenden, but sadly I did not play very good golf that day!”
