Lancashire Mum Publishes Golf-Themed Picture Book
A mother of two from Lancashire has published a golf-themed picture book. Stephanie Kwok, from Poulton-Le-Fylde, was inspired to do so by her eldest son’s love of the game from an early age.
At the age of two, her eldest son would spend the majority of his days practicing his swing or his putting. He would recite all the golf terminology—‘fairway’, ‘bunker’, ‘rough’, ‘iron’, ‘wood’…..and so on!
What started as gentle golf practice in the house with a toddler set of plastic golf clubs soon became confined to the garden with a set of junior golf clubs.
Inspiration Behind the Book
“Trying to find children’s picture books based on golf was difficult and the choice was very limited,” said the senior clinical perfusionist at Lancashire Cardiac Centre, Blackpool Victoria Hospital.
This inspired Stephanie to write Granny Gets Golf and explore the possibility of publishing the book. Years later, she is now delighted to share Granny Gets Golf!, thanks to Mascot Kids Publishing and the fantastically talented illustrations by Shaun Ivie.
A Fun Introduction to Golf
“Granny Gets Golf follows a little boy, as he takes his granny to the golf course and introduces her to the game,” explained Stephanie.
“Granny is confused by the golf words and their meanings. ‘Granny, No!’ says the little boy as his granny keeps on getting it wrong. The book allows you to follow the pair on their golf journey and find out if granny masters the game.
“I am hoping it is a perfect introduction to golf for young readers. The book has a simple structure with repetition and rhyme, so that children can anticipate and join in with the story,” she added.
Where to Find Granny Gets Golf
Granny Gets Golf is available in several Lancashire pro shops and family golf attractions, including:
- Royal Lytham, Royal Birkdale, Poulton, Preston, Fleetwood, Bramhall Park
- Lytham Golf Academy, Staining Lodge Swing Studio, and Clarkes Golf
- The Flower Bowl Entertainment Centre and Trafford Golf Centre
“I’m also promoting the book through primary school book readings, which have been so much fun. My overall goal is to introduce the golf basics to children through a fun story.”
A New Passion for Writing
Stephanie has now been inspired to write more children’s picture books and hopes Granny Gets Golf will be the first of many.
