Ringway Golf Club’s Ian Rankin Raises £8,519 for NSPCC
Ringway Golf Club’s Ian Rankin enjoyed a great year as captain with his fundraising efforts going to the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC).
He was delighted to welcome the NSPCC’s Emma Smyth to the club to present her with a cheque for £8,519.15.
Supporting a Worthy Cause
Ian said: “I chose NSPCC as my charity for a national charity well known to members and to sit alongside lady captain Pat Taylor’s local charity, St Ann’s Hospice.
“Another connection to my chosen charity is my wife Kate, who has worked with the local NSPCC committee fundraising for many years.
“The main fundraising effort was a Charity Golf Day back in the summer when members donated auction prizes at the dinner and funds were also raised during the golf.
“I would like to give a special thanks to event organisers, past lady captain Geraldine Senior and Gary Kirkwood, and on the day to our auctioneer Steve Hannon.”
The NSPCC’s Mission
Emma added: “I came down to the presentation on behalf of our Bowdon NSPCC fundraising group, of which I am the chair, and I am also a member of the main NSPCC Trustee Board.
“Our mission is the prevention of child abuse and neglect and we do this by trying to reach as many children and young people as possible.
“In our Childline service, on average, a child contacts us every 45 seconds.
“We have a number of bases throughout the country, including one in Salford, delivering almost 200,000 counselling sessions from those bases in 2023/24.
“We are heavily dependent on our highly trained counsellors to deliver the service and around £1,200 can cover the cost of training one of our counsellors, with £4 covering the cost to answer a child’s call.
Providing Essential Support
“The NSPCC Helpline for Adults, with a base in our Salford office, is an amazing free facility for adults to phone if they are concerned about a child’s welfare. Our bases have responded to more than 75,000 contacts throughout the UK, supporting, advising, and signposting each concerned caller.
“We also have a thriving NSPCC Schools Service delivering our age-appropriate ‘Speak Out, Stay Safe’ assemblies and workshops in primary schools across the country. In Cheshire alone, this includes over 120 primary schools, reaching nearly 30,000 children in 2023/24.
“In addition, we do a lot of campaigning work, direct work with children and families affected by abuse in the North West, and provide information, resources, and courses for professionals and people working with children via over 2.8 million visits to our website.”
