Kapalua Plantation Course Reopens November 10 After Irrigation Restrictions
Kapalua Plantation Course will reopen for public play on Monday, November 10, 2025. The course has been closed since September 2, 2025 whilst the agronomy team worked to restore turf health following prolonged irrigation restrictions on Maui.
The reopening comes after Kapalua Golf implemented a comprehensive turf recovery programme during the closure period.
Course conditions have improved sufficiently to allow public play, though the venue will not host The Sentry PGA TOUR event in January 2026 as conditions remain below tournament standards.
Irrigation Restrictions Forced Extended Closure
Under Tier 4 water restrictions in the summer of 2025, which banned all irrigation, Kapalua’s two golf courses, managed by Troon, faced considerable stress.
Since early September, the facility has operated under Tier 3 restrictions, allowing 60% reduced water usage compared to normal levels.
The agronomy team focused restoration efforts on the championship layout during this period.
Alex Nakajima, General Manager at Kapalua Golf, said:
We are deeply grateful for our agronomy team and the work they have done to bring the course back. As a key contributor to the Maui economy, reopening the Kapalua Plantation Course means a lot for our community and the 300+ employees who work at the course and restaurants.
Limited Holes Available at Reopening
The course will initially reopen with 16 holes available for play. Restoration work continues on the greens at holes 1 and 8. Golfers will receive a $50 golf shop credit to compensate for the reduced layout.
November tee times became available on October 23 at 7:30 a.m. HST. The promotional reopening rate is set at $399 for November rounds. December booking will operate on a 14-day advance window, with rates to be announced as management assesses ongoing course conditions.
Maui residents can access a five-day booking window through the Reservations Department at 808-669-8044. December tee times for December 1 will open on Monday, November 17.
The Sentry Tournament Relocated for 2026
The PGA TOUR announced on September 16 that The Sentry tournament will not take place at the Kapalua Plantation Course in January 2026.
Whilst turf health has improved to acceptable standards for daily play, conditions do not yet meet PGA TOUR requirements for championship competition.
The Plantation Course typically hosts the season-opening PGA TOUR event each January. The course measures 7,596 yards from the championship tees and plays to a par of 73. It ranks No. 23 on Golf Digest’s “America’s Top 100 Public Courses” list.
Bay Course Remains Closed
Kapalua’s Bay Course will remain closed until further notice while restoration work continues.
The facility’s driving range, golf shops, and dining venues at both Plantation House and Taverna have remained operational throughout the closure period.
The resort’s tennis and pickleball facilities have also continued normal operations. The Tennis Garden features eight dedicated pickleball courts alongside traditional tennis facilities.
What This Means for Maui Golf
The Kapalua Plantation Course reopening marks a significant step for Maui’s golf tourism sector. The facility employs more than 300 staff across its golf courses and restaurants.
The resort’s position as a major economic contributor to the island makes the reopening important for the wider community.
Visitors planning rounds at Kapalua can book tee times by calling 808-669-8044 between 7:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. HST or via email at mauireservations@troon.com.
The Bay Course celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2025 and features a notable par-three 17th hole that plays over the ocean.
Course updates and December rates will be announced as conditions continue to improve under the ongoing Tier 3 water restrictions.
