New clubhouse and housing development at North Manchester Golf Club
The Middleton-based club is set to get a new clubhouse and build 56 homes where the old one currently stands after plans were approved. The project will see the club bulldoze its current clubhouse, pro shop, function room, and greenkeepers’ store.
A new clubhouse with ‘four attractive arches’ will be rebuilt closer to the first tee.
A reception, pro shop, members’ bar, and snooker room would all be created over three floors.
An event room with views overlooking the lake, up to the first tee and down the fairway will also be built.
When the old clubhouse is demolished, joint developers Duchy Homes will build the 56 homes in its place. The 2.7-hectare site off Manchester Old Road will feature a mix of three, four, and five-bedroom homes with off-street parking and areas of open green space.
Chair of North Manchester Golf Club, Nick O’Toole, told the planning committee meeting that the current clubhouse is not fit for purpose and has fallen into disrepair.
He said: “We are thrilled that our planning application has been approved, marking a significant milestone in the club’s history.”
Concerns had been raised about what would happen to wildlife at the existing site, but councillors on the planning committee were satisfied and approved the application unanimously.
Exciting new facilities for members
The approved plans include the development of a new clubhouse, designed to enhance the experience for members and visitors.
“Key features include a state-of-the-art facility featuring a golf shop, swing room, an upper-floor function room with a member’s bar, and a snooker room.
“Accessibility will be improved with a bridge link connecting the clubhouse directly to the golf course, facilitating seamless access for players.
“There will also be enhanced practice facilities following the relocation and improvement of the existing short-game practice area,” O’Toole explained.
Construction of a 116-space car park will accommodate what the club hopes will be an increase in membership and visitor numbers.
O’Toole added: “These developments are part of our commitment to preserving the club’s 130-year legacy while adapting to the evolving needs of the golfing community. The new facilities will ensure that North Manchester Golf Club remains a valued part of the local community for generations to come.”
Next steps for the project
“With planning approval secured, we are finalising timelines for the commencement of construction. We aim to keep disruptions to a minimum and will provide regular updates to our members and the local community as the project progresses,” explained O’Toole.
