Old Course Hotel Unveils Stunning Fourth Floor Transformation

The legendary Old Course Hotel, Golf Resort & Spa in St Andrews has recently pulled back the curtain on its magnificently refreshed fourth floor, offering an even more incredible experience for those visiting the ‘Home of Golf’.

Perched above one of the most iconic vistas in the sport, the extensive renovation has introduced a breathtaking new look to its renowned dining and social spaces, perfectly blending Scottish heritage with contemporary luxury.

Golfers and visitors alike can now indulge in the ultimate relaxed fine dining at the transformed Road Hole Restaurant or soak up the sophisticated atmosphere in the newly revitalised Road Hole Bar.

The redesign, masterfully executed by acclaimed design firm Richmond International, pays homage to the hotel’s stunning coastal surroundings with a natural palette of rich burgundies, warm sandy tones, and delicate sky blues – all while overlooking the famous 17th hole of the Old Course.

Phyllis Wilkie, the Old Course Hotel’s General Manager, shared her excitement:

“This renovation embodies our ethos of always evolving while remaining true to our roots. Our guests can savour both the landscape and cuisine that makes Scotland truly special and revel in the elevated, comfortable spaces that nod to our home in St Andrews, and give a true sense of place.”

Culinary Theatre and Local Delights

The Road Hole Restaurant now boasts an elegant, relaxed fine-dining atmosphere, complete with a vibrant open kitchen.

This touch of theatre allows guests to watch talented chefs flame-grill fresh seafood and artfully prepare signature dishes.

The menu proudly showcases the finest local produce, featuring temptations like St Andrews Bay lobster ravioli, perfectly cooked Fife lamb, and a delightful French-inspired Vacherin dessert with East Neuk strawberries from the nearby Blacketyside farm.

“We are very fortunate that our location on the coast of Fife puts us in the best spot to source some of the finest produce not just in Scotland, but the world,” notes Mario Rodrigues, Director of Food and Beverage.

The Social Heart and Whisky Haven

The beloved Road Hole Bar has been transformed into the hotel’s vibrant social epicentre. By day, it’s a welcoming spot for aromatic coffees and satisfying light bites.

As evening approaches, it transitions into a sophisticated sanctuary, perfect for post-round analysis or relaxed conversation over fine tipples.

Whisky aficionados will find themselves in paradise, with over 300 varieties from Scottish and global distilleries to explore – from Islay’s peaty drams to Speyside’s honeyed notes.

Elegance and Heritage Refined

The transformation extends to The Boardroom, now featuring beautiful cream woven wallpaper and artwork depicting dreamlike Scottish landscapes, fostering a deep connection with the surroundings.

It retains what might be one of Scotland’s most spectacular boardroom views, ideal for both corporate gatherings and intimate private dining.

Notably, the original boardroom table has been expertly reconditioned by Ayrshire-based Thomas Johnstone Ltd, a firm also responsible for restoring the cherished piano on the fourth floor.

Further enhancing the fourth-floor experience, Swilcan Loft has reopened following a soft refurbishment. This contemporary seafood bar and chophouse offers an elevated take on surf and turf, championing Scotland’s best shellfish alongside prized local cuts of beef and lamb.

For those warmer days and evenings, The Deck at Road Hole Bar is now open for the summer season, providing intimate pods and cosy blankets – the perfect spot for sundowners with sweeping views over West Sands Beach, the Old Course, and St Andrews.

The project proudly incorporates prestigious Scottish manufacturers, including Johnstons of Elgin for luxurious fabrics and a custom contemporary tartan carpet from Ulster Carpets, commissioned in honour of the late Herb Kohler Jr.

“We’re not just renovating a space,” adds Wilkie, “we’re creating living narratives that connect our guests to the soul of Scottish heritage while delivering truly indulgent good times.”

The newly transformed fourth floor began welcoming guests on 30th April 2025, promising an unforgettable addition to any St Andrews golf pilgrimage.
