Birchwood Member’s 72nd Birthday Challenge Raises £2k for Charity
Birchwood member Paul Harris has completed a 72-hole challenge in under 12 hours.
Harris, who celebrated his 72nd birthday just two days earlier, played a full round from each of the club’s four sets of tees to raise awareness and funds for Prostate Cancer UK.
Raising Awareness for Men’s Health
He said: “It is important that men talk about their health. We have had members successfully treated, but sadly, we have also lost some to this awful disease.
“Progress is continually being made in diagnosis and treatment, but there is much to be done.”
Challenge on Hottest Day of Year
Harris, who completed the challenge on one of the hottest days of the year, said:
I was pleased with my performance for the first two and a half rounds, but my game suffered as the heat and fatigue set in.
The first three rounds at Birchwood Golf Club counted towards his handicap, earning him a small reduction.

He said he has no plans to take on a bigger challenge in the future, joking that he definitely won’t be playing five rounds in a day when he turns 90.
Birchwood Fundraising Event Since 2017
Harris lost his father to prostate cancer and has also undergone prostate removal himself. He has organised an annual fundraising event at the club since 2017.
This year’s total was more than double the usual amount raised.
