Sam Marshall Wins at Welsh Open Youths Championship

Sam Marshall Triumphs at Welsh Open Youths Championship

Bull Bay Golf Club Hosts Sam Marshall’s Career-Defining Victory

Peterborough’s Sam Marshall put in a commanding performance to earn the biggest win of his career at the Welsh Open Youth’s Championship in Bull Bay Golf Club, Anglesey.

The 17-year-old had three rounds in the 60s to win by eight shots from compatriot Samuel Johnson, with Bargoed’s Ryan Williams in fifth and the top-placed Welsh player.

England’s Isobel Badger was 15th overall, the top-placed female, with Ffion Richardson of Royal Lytham and St Annes tied 22nd overall and the top-placed Welsh female.

Marshall hopes the victory might nudge the England selectors into picking him for the national boys squad while being delighted with the course and facilities at the North Wales club.

“This is definitely my best achievement so far with the history of the event and everything,” said Marshall.

“It was really good to win.

I tried to stay in the present, not think of the prize, and think one shot at a time, but when I hit my approach into 18 I started to enjoy it.

My Dad was here, which was really good. He was really proud at the end.

It was a great competition, some really good players.

I loved Bull Bay, it is such an amazing golf course, all the members have been so welcoming.

It has a really tough finish as well, so it was nice having a big lead going into the last holes.

I’m from St Neots, live in Peterborough, and I am just trying to see how far I can get in golf.

Bull Bay is very different from St Neots, a short, tight parkland course, whereas this is a pretty tight links and long golf course.

Next for me is the Henry Cooper and then it is non-stop from there until September.

I am in the regional squad, trying to get into the England Boys squad this year, and then I have another year as well at junior level.

Hopefully, this will be a nice reminder to the selectors.

I have been playing some good golf without getting over the line, so this is a massive confidence boost for the rest of the season.”

There were five Welsh golfers in the top 10, with Charley Simpson, Rhos on Sea, Alex Japp, Conwy, and Ryan Davies, Mountain Ash, all in tied seventh, along with Charlie Ward, The Wilmslow, in tied 10th.

“Congratulations to Sam who put in a very impressive performance in such a quality field, with competitors from all over the UK and Ireland,” said Dan Fullager, Wales Golf Competitions Manager.

“Bull Bay were fabulous hosts for the event.

The course was in great condition and a good test for the best young players, while the staff and volunteers helped the event run smoothly.”
