Steve Bond Drives In as New Captain at Eastham Lodge Golf Club
More than 100 members and guests watched him tee off. “Teeing off in front of so many people isn’t something I have had to do before. I didn’t feel too nervous but I hit a bad drive that was heading out of bounds until it hit a tree,” said Steve.
The 74-year-old will raise funds for St Mary’s Church, Eastham Village, after hearing that the lady vicar there did great work to help local underprivileged people.
“I’m also hoping to raise some money to help buy a piece of sweep and fill kit we need that makes a big difference to our greens,” added the 17-handicapper, who raised £780 on his Drive-In day from a raffle.
A Long-Standing Member and Avid Golfer
The retired engineer has been a member at the Wirral-based Eastham Lodge Golf Club for 32 years. He described himself as a “nomadic golfer” before that.
“I actually played my first ever round of golf in the 1980s at Eastham,” said Steve, who expects to play as many as 180 rounds of golf during his year in office.
“I’m a member of the North Cheshire Captains and play a lot of senior golf too. I’ve done a chart for my wife of all the games!”
Steve, who lives in Bromborough, has two away days, two Captain’s Days, and a couple of charity golf days to plan, as well as continuing his work organising a volunteer group of seven or eight members who help out on the course each Wednesday.
“We had a busy winter after helping our green staff with modifying two tee boxes as well as extensive work to re-model all the bunkers,” Steve commented. “I’ve been helping for the last 10 years and love playing a small part in keeping the course improvements going.”
