Old Petty at Cabot Highlands Prepares for Preview Play in August 2025
Golfers will soon have the opportunity to experience one of the most anticipated new golf courses in Scotland, as Old Petty at Cabot Highlands is set to open for preview play from 1 August to 30 September 2025.
Designed by renowned architect Tom Doak, the 18-hole layout sits adjacent to Castle Stuart and the historic Old Petty Church, offering golfers a dramatic new links-style experience steeped in Highland scenery and history.
The release of the first images of Old Petty reveals a course that embraces both the natural contours of the land and the heritage of the Inverness coastline.
Routed through a tidal estuary and with views of the Moray Firth, Castle Stuart, and Old Petty Church, the course promises a compelling new chapter in Scotland’s modern golf landscape.
A Doak Design Rooted in Highland Character

Old Petty has been brought to life by Tom Doak and his associate Clyde Johnson, with a routing that follows the natural drama of the land. Highlights include:
- A short par-3 17th hole, offering a dramatic change of pace late in the round
- Opening and closing holes that interweave near the clubhouse, creating a connected and flowing finish
- Spectacular coastal views on the 10th hole, and a return to the water on the 14th
- A layout that celebrates the authentic links traditions of Scotland with a modern touch
Doak’s design draws on the history of the area, incorporating views of the 1839-built Old Petty Church and the 400-year-old Castle Stuart, giving players a true sense of place.
The new course is set to complement the existing Castle Stuart course, which has earned global acclaim since opening in 2009.

During the preview window from August to September 2025, Old Petty will be available as a walking-only course, reinforcing its links identity and immersive design philosophy.
Preview play will only be accessible in conjunction with a booking at Castle Stuart, ensuring golfers can enjoy both courses as part of a complete Cabot Highlands experience.

Speaking about the project, Ben Cowan-Dewar, CEO and co-founder of Cabot, said:
“From the outset, our vision has been to honour the land and its rich history while crafting an unforgettable golf experience that adds to the reputation of Castle Stuart. Old Petty is a course that will surprise, challenge and inspire, true to the spirit of the Highlands.”
The logo of Old Petty features the region’s iconic Highland cow (“coo”), a nod to local culture and the rustic beauty of the area. Combined with a strong visual identity and Doak’s minimalist philosophy, the course aims to feel both timeless and contemporary.
A Unique Highland Golf Experience

As Cabot Highlands continues to evolve into a destination for world-class golf in northern Scotland, Old Petty offers a fresh opportunity to explore the links game in a setting rich with heritage.
From the estuary-hugging fairways to the interplay with Castle Stuart and Old Petty Church, it promises to be a course with character, history, and challenge in equal measure.
Golfers looking to experience Old Petty in 2025 are encouraged to book early, as preview availability is expected to be in high demand.
