Wales Golf Launches 2025 Steps Challenge to Boost Participation Ahead of AIG Women’s Open.

Golfers Invited to Join Wales Golf 2025 Steps Challenge

Wales Golf, with support from The R&A, has unveiled the 2025 Steps Challenge to encourage golf participation in Wales throughout July, coinciding with the build-up to the AIG Women’s Open — the largest women’s sporting event ever staged in the country.

A Nationwide Drive to Get Golfers Moving

The 2025 Steps Challenge invites golfers and clubs across Wales to join a month-long initiative promoting community engagement, enjoyment, and inclusivity on the course.

Participating clubs will be encouraged to host informal competitions designed to welcome both existing members and newcomers to golf.

Each round played will count towards a collective “step count”, with nine holes equivalent to 5,000 steps and a full 18-hole round equating to 10,000 steps.

The club achieving the highest overall step total by the end of July will be named the winner, while standout individual participants will also be recognised.

According to Wales Golf, the campaign aims to harness the enthusiasm around the AIG Women’s Open and transform it into a positive grassroots activity across Welsh golf communities.

Promoting Health and Participation

Theo Baker, Head of Participation at Wales Golf, highlighted golf’s well-established physical benefits, noting that “Welsh golf courses are great places to walk” and describing the challenge as an easy way to “get a bit more out of your exercise with some fantastic and unique prizes on offer”.

The challenge is open to both clubs and individual members, with Wales Golf responsible for tracking participants’ results.

The R&A’s Kevin Barker, Director of Golf Development for GB&I and Africa, also expressed his support, stating:

“We’re delighted to be collaborating with Wales Golf to encourage more women and juniors to get involved in the sport through this fun and inclusive Steps Challenge.”

He added that the AIG Women’s Open is about inspiring future generations and connecting with local communities to show that “everyone has a place in golf.”

Inspiring New Golfers and Building Community Spirit

By linking the challenge to the excitement of a major championship being held in Wales for the first time, the organisers hope to encourage golf clubs to think creatively about how to welcome newcomers.

Beyond the competitive aspect, the challenge is positioned as a way to highlight golf’s wide-ranging health benefits, including improved strength, balance, and social connection, as well as the prevention and management of over 40 chronic conditions.

A Positive Step for Welsh Golf

The 2025 Steps Challenge offers a straightforward way for golfers to support their club, increase their physical activity, and help promote the appeal of the sport ahead of a landmark event in the Welsh sporting calendar.

More details about how to take part can be found on the Wales Golf website.
