Martyn Senior Hits Sixth Hole-in-One at Hesketh
His latest came during Invitation Day, playing off the white tees, at his home club Hesketh, when he aced on the 155-yard long second hole.
“There was a gale blowing against so I hit a five hybrid,” said Martyn, who has been a single figure golfer for the last 57 years.
“The second is to an elevated green so whilst one of our four asked where the ball had gone, no-one actually saw it go in,” he added.
Early Golf and First Ace
The 70-year-old first started playing at the age of 14 in 1969.
He explained:
My first hole-in-one, aged 17, was with the small ball, a 1.62 Avoirdupois. My playing partners at Hesketh were not even born then and had no idea what that meant.
“That first ace was at Bury Golf Club with a BMW car on offer for a hole-in-one on the 138-yard first hole.
“My ace was on the 174-yard 10th and I won nothing. I would have gladly given up my amateur status for a BMW.
“My second was also with the small ball during the transition from the ‘British Ball’ to the American sized ball, the 1.68, which we play with today.
“Playing a Greensome at Mellor Golf Club, where I started my golf, on that day back in 1972 my partner had refused to play the ‘American Ball’ so I had to buy a new Dunlop 65 and unwrap it.
“My third was Invitation Day at Chorley Golf Club on the third hole.
“My fourth was a GCMA Day at Wilmslow on the 17th and my fifth in the English Seniors Championship on the 13th hole at Eden Golf Club.”
