How La Hacienda Links Leads the Way in Spanish Golf Sustainability
La Hacienda Links Golf Resort has set a new standard for environmental responsibility on the Costa del Sol.
Unveiling a comprehensive sustainability programme that has already reduced water consumption by 20% and positioned the venue as a leader in sustainable golf courses in Spain.
The 36-hole resort, home to both the Links and Heathland courses, has undertaken significant upgrades to protect the local environment while maintaining top-level playing conditions.
Central to the changes has been the introduction of Bermuda grass on greens, chosen for its drought and disease resistance.
This has lowered the need for both water and chemical treatments while delivering consistent, high-quality putting surfaces.
In addition, more than five hectares of non-essential irrigation have been replaced by the planting of 200,000 mastic trees, helping conserve resources and providing a habitat for native biodiversity.
The acclaimed halfway house, which won “World’s Best Halfway House” at the 2024 World Golf Awards, was built with sustainable materials and reflects the resort’s commitment to responsible development.
Cutting-Edge Practices Reduce Water and Energy Use
Water efficiency has been further improved by the adoption of Rain Bird’s CirrusPRO irrigation system.
Managing more than 1,200 sprinklers across the property, the system adapts daily to weather conditions, ensuring water is only used when necessary.
Hybrid mowing machinery fitted with electric cutters has replaced traditional units, eliminating emissions and oil leaks while improving efficiency.
La Hacienda has also refurbished its pumping station to cut electricity usage and CO2 output, while solar panels now provide renewable energy in the resort’s golf car park.
Looking ahead, the property plans to phase out plastic bottles entirely, with water fountains installed to keep golfers refreshed without unnecessary waste.
Director General Javier Jimenez Casquet explained the philosophy driving these changes:
“We believe that to be truly effective, sustainability cannot simply be a side project segregated from the rest of a resort’s operations. It must be built into every aspect of a venue, like when we constructed our halfway house. Every member of the team is working hard every day to achieve our sustainability goals.”
A Model for Sustainable Golf Courses in Spain
These measures form part of a wider investment programme that has propelled La Hacienda Links to the forefront of European golf.
Between 2022 and 2025 the resort has added a new clubhouse, dining facilities, a beach club, and luxury real estate developments, alongside the opening of the five-star Fairmont La Hacienda hotel earlier this year.
With the finale of the 2025 Santander Golf Tour set to take place on its championship courses, La Hacienda’s reputation as one of Europe’s most progressive golf destinations continues to grow.
Its commitment to long-term environmental stewardship ensures it stands out as a model for sustainable golf courses in Spain — and an example for other resorts across the continent to follow.
