European Ryder Cup legend Sergio García has expressed his excitement to finally tee it up at The Torre Course, his first full golf course design project, after the new layout officially opened to widespread acclaim at Terras da Comporta, one hour south of Lisbon.
Sergio García’s First Design in Portugal
The par-72 Torre Course, measuring 6,575 metres from the back tees, is the second championship layout to open at Terras da Comporta following the debut of The Dunas Course in 2023.
Designed over natural sandy terrain, the course combines tight fairways, small greens and bold risk-reward holes inspired by García’s favourite venue, Valderrama.

Speaking via video at the opening ceremony, García said:
“The quality of land made it so much fun for us to be able to make our mark there. I can’t wait to come back now it’s in play to put my hands on it, to feel it, and to see how it plays.”
As his first golf-course design in Portugal, García has used the project to showcase his design philosophy: playable yet testing golf with strong character.
“You don’t want it to be so difficult that you say, ‘Yes, it was a good challenge, but I don’t really want to play it again.’ It needs to be enjoyable as well, and sometimes it’s hard to get that balance. I think we have achieved that here.”
A Landmark Moment for Terras da Comporta
The opening event drew 88 VIPs, media, and guests, including Pedro Nunes Pedro, president of the Portuguese Golf Federation.
The course’s unveiling was described by Alexandre Berda, chairman of Vanguard Properties, as a defining moment for Portuguese golf:
“This opening is not just the celebration of a golf course, but the embodiment of a vision: to create projects that endure and that place Portugal and Comporta as a world-class destination.”
Terras da Comporta now boasts two distinctive courses — The Torre Course by García and The Dunas Course by David McLay Kidd — forming one of Europe’s most compelling new 36-hole golf destinations.
A New 36-Hole Destination in Portugal
According to Rodrigo Ulrich, golf general manager for Vanguard Properties, the two designs were deliberately conceived to complement each other:
“The Torre Course is very different in nature to The Dunas Course. Combined together, they make an irresistible combination, and I have no doubt that Terras da Comporta will quickly be regarded as one of the best 36-hole venues anywhere in Europe.”
Beyond golf, the wider Terras da Comporta development is set to include tennis, padel, pickleball, horse riding, and a range of hotel and residential offerings — reinforcing its aim to become a world-class lifestyle and golf destination in Portugal.
