Cole Self Stars as Cheshire Claim Historic Boys’ County Title
Cheshire were crowned 2025 English Boys’ County Final Champions for just the third time in their history and the first time since 1998, after winning all three matches at Elsham Golf Club in Lincolnshire.
Cheshire took the maximum of six possible match points, which started with a 7.5-1.5 win over Cambridgeshire on the first day, before beating Wiltshire 6-3, and then sealing victory 5-4 against Hertfordshire on the final day.
Cole Self Leads Cheshire to Victory
Team captain Cole Self (Ringway) was Cheshire’s star performer as he picked up five points out of six, while Sandiway pair James Clark and Maxi Moore also had superb showings as they won a total of four points across three days.
Self said:
It feels amazing! We’ve had a lot of rough years coming second in a few events locally, so it feels good to win. It’s a tricky course, it was really firm, so you had to think about what you were hitting off the tees. On 14, my playing partner holed a bunker shot, it was a close match, and I followed him in for two, and that really got the game going. We came here with no expectations, so it’s unbelievable to win.
Years of Hard Work Pay Off
Coach Peter Barber added:
It’s been a lot of hard work over many years, to be honest. A lot of these boys have been involved for a long time from under-12 and under-14 level, so we’ve got a great relationship with them. It’s been a wonderful effort from everyone and this win means an awful lot to the county.
Hertfordshire were second and went head-to-head with Cheshire for the title on the final day.
Despite holding a narrow lead after the morning foursomes, Cheshire won the afternoon singles 4-2. Cambridgeshire finished third as they ended the week on a high with a 5-4 victory over Wiltshire.
