Ken Wardle’s legacy celebrated at Heaton Moor Golf Club
The family of a popular Manchester-based golfer who passed away last year have donated a trophy to be played for every year in his honour.
Ken Wardle, a member at Heaton Moor, was a well-known name in the region’s golfing scene.
As well as being a former chairman of the club’s Wednesday section, ground chairman, and match and handicap committee, Ken worked with publications such as Club Golf, Golfers Chronicle, and, more recently, our very own Golfers Local.
He was also a founder of the popular WGTB competitions, who ran golf events for hundreds of men, ladies, junior, and mixed players across the North West for many years.
Permanent legacy at Heaton Moor
Now Ken’s legacy will be permanent at his beloved club, as his family have donated a trophy to be used as a top prize in a Wednesday competition – to be decided.
Ken was also a good and very competitive golfer, playing off a decent handicap until well into his eighties.
His son Steve, who lives in Texas, flew over to join his brother Phil in the inaugural competition for the Ken Wardle Trophy at Heaton Moor and to present the trophy to Steve Woosey and Chris Hewitt, who posted a winning score of 45 points, just pipping Jim Crosbie and Mike Briggs and the junior pairing of Corey Ferry and George Smith.
Memorable day at the club
In their acceptance speech, Steve and Chris acknowledged the respect all the club members had for Ken.
Then Steve thanked the club for making Heaton Moor a second home for Ken and for the hospitality both he and Phil had received on a very special and memorable day.
