Terras da Comporta Ranks in Top 100 European Golf Courses
Terras da Comporta has been acknowledged in Golf World’s latest ranking of the Top 100 Courses in Continental Europe.
The Dunas Course moved up two places to number seven, retaining its position as Portugal’s number one, whilst The Torre Course entered the list at number 84 just months after opening.
Both championship layouts were assessed across six categories: design, setting, memorability, playability, consistency and presentation.
The judging panel awarded high scores to each course, with particular praise for conditioning and design quality.
The Dunas Course Rises to Number Seven
The Dunas Course, designed by David McLay Kidd, improved its ranking to seventh place in Continental Europe.
The layout opened in October 2023 and represents McLay Kidd’s first golf design project in mainland Europe.
Chris Bertram, the Top 100 editor, said:
To be on the brink of the Continental top five within two years of opening is testament to David McLay Kidd’s design and the way its fescue fairways and native vegetation have been nurtured. I have played it twice this year and it was simply outstanding, Portugal’s no.1 and a World Top 100 contender.
The par-71 course, located one hour south of Lisbon, has received multiple industry accolades.
These include being named World’s Best Golf Course at the 2024 World Golf Awards and ranking as Portugal’s number one in Leading Courses’ Golfers’ Choice Awards 2025 for the second consecutive year.
Torre Course Debuts in European Rankings
The Torre Course entered the Continental Europe top 100 at number 84. The layout, which opened in June 2025, is European Ryder Cup legend Sergio García’s first major golf course design project.
Bertram commented: “It only opened in June but was already superbly conditioned, and Sergio García has produced a course of real character and interest. It is categorically a success for Terras da Comporta and Vanguard Properties.”
The Top 100 editor highlighted the stretch from the ninth hole as particularly strong.
He added: “It’s as good a stretch as any course in the top 50 has, and you’re likely to see Torre move in that direction in future lists as it begins to mature further.”
Inspired by Real Club Valderrama, which García cites as his favourite course, the par-72 layout features generous fairways and small greens. The course measures 6,575 metres from the back tees.
Development Plans and Facilities
Located in the Comporta region, the development is owned by Vanguard Properties, Portugal’s largest real estate developer. The company acquired the site in 2019.
Rodrigo Ulrich, golf general manager for Vanguard Properties, said:
“It’s been an amazing two years for us since we launched The Dunas Course, and I think the most exciting thing is that we are only at the start of our journey. The Dunas continues to get better and better as it matures with age.
Terras da Comporta comprises two large developments: Torre, covering 365 hectares, and Dunas, occupying approximately 1,011 hectares.
Beyond the two 18-hole courses, planned facilities include tennis, padel, pickleball, and horse riding. The development will also feature plots for hotels, tourist accommodation, and residential properties.
The recognition in Golf World’s ranking reinforces the destination’s position among European golf venues.
Both courses continue to mature, with further improvements expected as the layouts develop over coming seasons.
