Josh Pars in to Hold Off Alan’s Challenge
A blistering start and an ice-cool finish by Josh Duckworth earned him first place at Garry Teeson’s Captain’s Day at Ruthin Pwllglas Golf Club.
The 19-handicapper opened with four straight pars before wobbling on the par-three seventh and ninth, where he double-bogeyed.
However, he steadied the ship and came home in style with a level-par run of three-four-three on the final three holes.
That gave him 40 points on a day when some testing pin positions made scoring tricky.
He pipped the steady Alan Padmore by a point after the former Ruthin Town footballer carded seven fours on his back nine.
Another ex-footballer, former Ruthin goalkeeper Phil Terzo, took third place.
Despite a disastrous start that saw him open with a seven and an eight, a much steadier back nine earned him third place ahead of a clutch of players led by competition secretary Steve Davies.
Davies managed par threes on the ninth and 18th despite flag positions that were treacherous—though not for Graham Hardinge, who knocked in a putt for a birdie two on the closing hole.
Sensational Scoring in the Ladies Section
The Ladies section saw some remarkable performances, with Ffion Aykroyd-Davies racking up an incredible 54 points to win at a canter.
Nia Davies finished second with an impressive 39 points, followed by Vicky Harrison in third with 36 points.
A Memorable Captain’s Day
Garry Teeson reflected on the day:
“What a great Captain’s Day I have just had. I would like to thank everyone for their help to get Saturday to work so well.
“We had 105 people on the course who teed off over seven hours. What a great turnout, and a big thanks to everyone.
“It was nice to see the clubhouse full in the evening for a few hours.
“The greens staff also did a fantastic job in bringing the course up to such great condition despite pretty much incessant rain all week.”
