A major new resource has been launched to help international golfers navigate Japan’s complex landscape, as the country positions itself to become one of the world’s leading golf tourism destinations.
Unlocking the “Far East” Fairways
Japanese inbound specialists AIR Golf Media and tour operator J Message have officially launched the Japan Golf Guide 2026.
The publication is a first-of-its-kind resource designed specifically for international tour operators and travel agents.
It aims to simplify the unique cultural and logistical challenges that golfers often face when booking rounds in the Land of the Rising Sun.
Curated for Accessibility
Edited by Kieron Cashell, CEO of AIR Golf Media, the guide focuses on “foreigner-friendly” courses that actively welcome international golfers.
It highlights Japan’s most established destinations, including the iconic Mount Fuji region and the coastal retreats of the Izu Peninsula.
Beyond the yardage, the guide provides essential insights into Japanese golf etiquette, local hospitality, and “hanami” (cherry blossom) season bookings.
Official View
Kieron Cashell, CEO of AIR Golf Media, stated:
“This guide focuses on Japan’s most accessible regions, welcoming courses, and the wider experiences that make golf travel here unique. As inbound golf continues to grow, we aim to expand coverage to more prefectures and courses each year.”
Japan has all the ingredients to become one of the world’s leading golf tourism destinations.
The Challenge
Japan presents a unique “all-day” golf culture that can be a surprise to uninitiated golfers.
- The Mid-Round Break: Unlike Western “through-play,” most Japanese courses include a mandatory 60-minute lunch break between the 9th and 10th holes.
- The “Golden Route”: While Tokyo and Osaka remain hubs, the guide pushes golfers toward Chiba and Shizuoka for higher course density and easier tee-time access.
- Technical Terrain: Many courses, such as the Pete Dye-designed PGM Maria Golf Links, feature extreme undulations and “island” greens that test strategic precision.
The Layout: Key Regions for 2026
The guide identifies three primary hubs for visiting golfers:
| Region | Highlight | Key Course |
|---|---|---|
| Kanto (Tokyo) | Proximity to Narita | Taiheiyo Club Narita (Gary Player) |
| Chubu (Fuji) | Majestic Mountain Views | Kawana Hotel Fuji Course (World Top 100) |
| Kansai (Kyoto) | Heritage & Strategy | Arima Royal – Noble Course |
