Karen Delighted with Her Charity Donation
Stockport Golf Club lady captain Karen Miles has presented a cheque for more than £9,000 to St Ann’s Hospice – a charity very close to her heart.
Karen said: “The reason for my choice was to give something back to the hospice, not only because of the end-of-life care they gave my mum, but the support they gave me and my sisters.
“It’s all about a piece of cake and on a very dark day, we went to the volunteer café and ordered tea, and the lady who served us took my hand and said, ‘Why don’t you have a piece of cake?’
“At that time, that cake felt like the best hug you ever had, and that’s when I was determined at some point to give back.
“I started my year by raffling my car parking space at the club for the year, and this gave me a great kick-start as it raised £1,140.
“The main events were the charity coffee morning, where Judith, from St Ann’s, was my speaker.
There were plenty of tears shed that afternoon as she shared her own experiences, which led her to work for St Ann’s.
“This was followed by a charity lunch, and the biggest fundraiser was my charity golf day.
“My thanks go to everyone who believed and supported me, members of the club, my family and friends for their never-ending generosity, giving up their time to attend events and putting up with my relentless badgering.
And of course, my husband Rajesh (who was then vice-captain). Without him, I would not have remained so focused.
“Julie Peters, Judith Lacy, and Imogen Priestley-Bird, who work for St Ann’s, came down to receive the cheque, and I was delighted when they told me that my name and contribution was displayed on the new display wall they have at St Ann’s.”
Judith said: “Karen has done amazing fundraising, and it will go towards the final £1million that we need to raise to build our brand-new, purpose-built hospice in Heald Green.”
